I sincerely apologize for being so late with this post!.

I have been planning to practice Gankaku this Friday, but as one of our students is going to have her 1st dan grading, today we will most probably practice sentei kata: Bassai Dai, Kankû Dai, Jion, Hangetsu, Empi. As I promised I will always adjust the training plan according to students needs. As about Gankaku, we will practice it next Friday or in two weeks. I will announce the plan during the training and here in my blog.

Kata Training am Freitag - Kata training on Friday - Тренировка по ката в пятницу: 18.11.2011, 20 Uhr, Freiburg dôjô (Merianschule‏)

Last Friday we started to work on Kankû Shô. Some applications (oyo) were practiced followed by the techniques from kata. I personally find this way of teaching kata to be the most effective and, so to say, "historically" correct. We fight and then we put our fighting experience into kata.

This Friday, 18.11.2011, we continue to work on Kankû Shô.

Osu! (News and perspectives)

First of all, I sincerely apologize for a long silence. Since August I have been travelling a lot.

In the first week of August my husband and I went to Herford (NRW) and participated in Gasshuku 2011. One of my personal highlights of this Gasshuku was the keiko on Sôchin kata by Julian Chees Sensei. Sôchin is currently one of my tokui katas together with Nijû Shi Ho. On August 5th I successfully graded to sandan (3rd degree black belt). Osu!

The same day we returned to Freiburg and on the next day we went to one of my favorite places on this planet - town of Mandelieu-la-Napoule. I love Mediterranean sea! We had some great outdoor trainings there with the emphasis on Kankû Dai.

After being back to Freiburg I travelled to my native city of Novosibirsk (Akademgorodok to be more precise), where I enjoy my staying right now.

My kata training was included into the regular schedule. It had to be started already, but another teacher will run the training till I will be back. So, Friday, 20:00, kata training!

Kata is a very powerful training device, but only if you know how to use it. Bunkai and oyo are going to be the core parts of the training. As always I have a training plan already, but if someone wants to perfect his/her kata for an upcoming grading, then he/she is welcome to let me know. A training plan should never be stiff, but should adapt to the needs of the moment.

But I would like to emphasis the following: kata training should not be limited to the training in the dojo only. It is not enough to learn a kata once in the dojo and then do nothing till the next training. So, please practice yourself, try to remember the techniques and important points.

When I will be back to Freiburg and have access to our home library I will write here more posts about katas in a way I used to write: additional information and some notes.

I will publish an update on my personal teaching schedule later, when all the details will be clear. The general training schedule of the Freiburg dôjô can be found in the Training schedule section of the blog.

(Groß-Umstadt)

Hideo Ochi Shidan (8 dan).

Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate".

Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 10. Unsu, Sôchin, Nijû Shi Ho".

Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 10. Unsu, Sôchin, Nijû Shi Ho"

shizentai – одновременно спереди hidari chûdan kamae chûdan mae geri и слева hidari chûdan kamae chûdan oi zuki — шаг назад с техникой 13 Kankû Shô, техника 14 Kankû Shô;

слева hidari chûdan kamae chûdan mae geri с возвратом в стойку и ushiro yori ashi — техника 23 Kankû Shô – chûdan oi zuki — техника 24 Kankû Shô: левой рукой отводящий блок изнутри наружу (что-то типа chûdan gedan barai) одновременно с chûdan gyaku zuki;

справа migi chûdan kamae chûdan mae geri с возвратом в стойку и ushiro yori ashi — техника 25 Kankû Shô – chûdan oi zuki — техника 26 Kankû Shô: правой рукой отводящий блок изнутри наружу (что-то типа chûdan gedan barai) одновременно с chûdan gyaku zuki;

спереди рубящий удар левой рукой сверху вниз — блок ладонями (этого движения нет в книге Nakayama Masatoshi “Best Karate. Vol. 9. Bassai Shô, Kankû Shô, Chinte) – спереди рубящий удар правой рукой сверху вниз — техника 27 Kankû Shô, захват кисти правой рукой, левой рукой подхват под локоть, движение вперёд, болевой на правую руку противника, поворот на 360 градусов отшагивая назад с техникой 29b Kankû Shô;

слева hidari chûdan kamae jôdan oi zuki — техники 30-31 Kankû Shô: hidari yoko uraken uchi как блок, jôdan yoko geri keage, jôdan mawashi empi uchi с одновременным захватом противника;

справа hidari chûdan kamae jôdan oi zuki — техники 32-32 Kankû Shô: migi yoko uraken uchi как блок, chûdan yoko geri kekomi(!), jôdan mawashi empi uchi с одновременным захватом противника;

спереди hidari chûdan kamae jôdan oi zuki – техника 34 Kankû Shô – шаг назад – техники 35-36 Kankû Shô, но chûdan mae geri, migi uraken jôdan tate mawashi uchi выше чем обычно – jôdan kizami zuki – техники 37-39 Kankû Shô, но migi jôdan uchi uke;

сзади hidari chûdan kamae jôdan oi zuki — начало техники 40 Kankû Shô, то есть jôdan haishu uke, но быстро!, jôdan migi mawashi geri назад (в направлении куда был блок), поворот в hidari chûdan kamae в направлении по диагонали вправо от и.п.;

Julian Chees (5 dan), Gojû Shi Ho Shô

Gojû Shi Ho Shô oyo:

Vol. 10. Unsu, Sôchin, Nijû Shi Ho"):

Unsu:

Vol. 10. Unsu, Sôchin, Nijû Shi Ho" обычная zenkutsu dachi.)
3 Heian Shodan

Jean-Pierre Fischer (7 dan), Meikyô

Nakayama Masatoshi “Best Karate. Vol. 11. Gojû Shi Ho Dai, Gojû Shi Ho Shô, Meikyô”

Nakayama Masatoshi “Best Karate. Vol. 11. Gojû Shi Ho Dai, Gojû Shi Ho Shô, Meikyô”)
Nakayama Masatoshi “Best Karate. Vol. 11. Gojû Shi Ho Dai, Gojû Shi Ho Shô, Meikyô”)
Nakayama Masatoshi “Best Karate. Vol. 11. Gojû Shi Ho Dai, Gojû Shi Ho Shô, Meikyô”)

Tekki Sandan

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Tekki Sandan (鉄騎三段) - "Iron Horseman, Third Level" - "Железный всадник, третий уровень".

Original name for Tekki was Naihanchi. Several versions exist about creation of Naihanchi (Naihanchi Shodan), Naihanchi Nidan and Naihanchi Sandan. Original Naihanchi kata is often credited to Matsumura Sokon (1809-1902), who probably taught Naihanchi to Itosu Yasutsune.

One version says that these two kata were created by Itosu Yasutsune on the basis of original Naihanchi. Another version says that the original Naihanchi was broken into three parts (possibly by Itosu Yasutsune, or Tokumine Pechin, or Motobu Choki).

Funakoshi Gichin learned Naihanchi kata (Naihanchi Shodan, Naihanchi Nidan, Naihanchi Sandan) from Itosu Yasutsune and later renamed them as Tekki.

Hirokazu Kanazawa in his book "Shotokan Karate International Kata (Vol. 1)" says: "If one practices daily every morning and evening Tekki he may be called a karate-ka".

Tekki Nidan (鉄騎二段) - "Iron Horseman, Second Level" - "Железный всадник, второй уровень".

Supplementary materials for kata training - дополнительные материалы для тренировки по ката: Ji'in

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Ji'in (慈蔭) - the name can be written down in two ways, thus, leading to two different translations:

Funakoshi Gichin Sensei tried to rename Ji'in as Shôkyo (松陰) ("Pine Shadow" - "Тень сосны"), but the new name didn't stay.

Ji'in belongs probably to Tomari-te. Funakoshi Sensei could possibly learn this kata from Itosu Anko Sensei.

Jion, Jitte and Ji'in are very often classified into one group because they share similar techniques.

Thus, block with your "sword hands" and not with your palms.

Right arm moves from right to left, forearm is vertical and covers jôdan, straight left arm moves from left to right and covers chûdan and gedan. Preparative movement in a block is a block itself. Hips are in hanmi.

2. migi chûdan tate shutô uke - hips are in shomen. Slow and powerful block.

5. migi ken sokumen jôdan uchi uke, hidari ken sokumen gedan uke - have a strong feeling of going forward, don't learn back.

6. migi ken gedan uke, hidari ken jôdan uke - see notes for 1.

Sôchin

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Sôchin (壯鎭) - "Strength [and] Calm" ("Strongly Rooted") -"Сила [и] спокойствие" ("Прочно укорениться").

Sôchin was probably created by Funakoshi Yoshitaka in the late 1930s. There are number of similarities to Sôchin of Aragaki Seisho (an Okinawan martial arts master, 1840-1918(?1920)). Thus, Aragaki Sôchin could be used as a basis.

Aragaki Seisho (an Okinawan martial arts master, 1840-1918(?1920)) taught Sôchin to Mabuni Kenwa (1889-1952, the founder of Shitô ryû). As in case with Nijû Shi Ho (Niseishi), Sôchin could be learned by Funakoshi Yoshitaka and Nakayama Masatoshi from Mabuni Kenwa.

Funakoshi Gichin Sensei tried to rename Sôchin as Hakko ("Eight Storms" ("Восемь бурь")), but the new name didn't stay.

Kankû Shô was derived from Kankû Dai by Itosu Yasutsune.

5b. hidari maeude hineri - see notes for 4b.

I provide the names of techniques as well as their numbers according to the book of Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 9. Bassai Shô, Kankû Shô, Chinte". Kodansha International, 1987. If some other names are used, then the source is provided.

1a-1b. ryô shô de kôhô o harau; ryô shô jôdan yoko barai - don't jump high, but move horizontally.

2a-2b. migi shô hitai mae ni kazasu, hidari shô hidari koshi mae; hidari te hidari kata mae, migi shô migi kata ue - for a better understanding, practice against a partner with bo (jô, or any suitable stick), like we did in dôjô.

3a. migi maeude gedan sukui uke - don't bend too much, while blocking.

16. ryo shô tsukami uke - hips are in gyaku hanmi.

20b, 23, 25. migi ken migi yoko chûdan zuki (tsuki uke), hidari ken migi yoko chûdan zuki - left punch is chûdan zuki, not kagi zuki.

24. hidari ken hidari yoko chûdan zuki (tsuki uke), migi ken hidari yoko chûdan zuki - right punch is chûdan zuki, not kagi zuki.

26. hidari shô chûdan tsukami uke, migi shô gedan tsukami uke - there are several versions of this technique. I consider none to be wrong, as long as 1) the principles behind the techniques are not violated (nothing should be additionally invented) and 2) student knows the application of the version he/she performs.

27. migi shô chûdan tsukami yose, hidari shô gedan tsukami yose - see notes for 26.

I will update this list further, adding some more notes. Please watch the announcement list above!

I sincerely hope that this will help you to perfect the kata further. Osu!

Chinte

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Sometimes translated also as "Strange Hand" ("Странная рука") or "Unusual Hand" ("Необычная рука").

Chinte is believed to be a Shuri Te kata. Funakoshi Gichin Sensei tried to rename this kata as Shôin, but the new name didn't stay.

Chinte features unusual hand techniques (which explain the name of the kata) and only one kick.

And, yes! Three hops at the end! I have seen three explanations:
1) three hops are the traces of some lost techniques;
2) the application is holding an opponent's arm and moving back to break his wrist (I will show this application during the training);
3) these three hops were added in order to return to a starting point (this one sounds strange to me).

Some notes on Jitte

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

I provide the names of techniques as well as their numbers according to the book of Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 7. Jitte, Hangetsu, Empi". Kodansha International, 1985. If some other names are used, then the source is provided.

1. uhai tekubi chûdan osae uke, hidari ken hidari koshi - hips are in hanmi. This is a slow and powerful movement.

2. migi teishô gedan osae uke, hidari teishô chûdan oshi age uke - hips are in shomen. This is also a slow and powerful movement.

4. migi shô tekubi migi sokumen chûdan kake uke, hidari ken hidari koshi - slide to the right (yori ashi) while doing block.

5. migi teishô migi sokumen chûdan yoko uchi, hidari ken hidari koshi - don't move your left foot close to your right foot, but step half of the distance to the right, then step to kiba dachi. Remember bunkai in order to perform the steps correctly, you are moving out of the attack line. Don't turn your hips too early into kiba dachi.

6.-7. and 11.-13. General note: don't turn your hips too early into kiba dachi. Keep hips in shomen while stepping forward and make a power turn into kiba dachi.

15.-18. For a better understanding I would strongly recommend to take a partner with jô or bo or any suitable stick and try the techniques.

I will update this list further, adding some more notes. Please watch the announcement list above!

I sincerely hope that this will help you to perfect the kata further. Osu!

Training diaries

I have been writing my diaries since my first training in Shotokan karate on October 1st, 1991. In 1991-1999 these were the handwritten notes, since 1999 these are the electronic text files.

I have few different types of training diaries.

1. The detailed description of every training with comments on correct performance, important things, personal errors and ways of improvement.

The main advantage is that you can easily recall what you were doing some time (week, month, 10 years, etc.) ago. Of course, it takes some time to write everything down, but, while writing down, you can review the obtained experience and devise new training plans and strategies for yourself.

I have written down 99,9% of all training sessions I have ever did or taught. 0.1% falls out because I was too tired or too busy to write down. But never I was lazy to write!

2. Personal training plans: these are the plans for a week, month, year, etc.

If the previous one is "the past", then this one is "the future". I write down and constantly update my personal training goals, training schedules, etc. This is very helpful if you want to have your training in a systematic way.

I don't understand those people who simply come to train without analyzing why they do this or that. If you want to progress you have to set some goals. These goals can be global, like "I want to "improve my kata", or "I want to become nidan", or "I want to win this tournament". Having a global goal can be very inspiring, but in order to progress toward this goal you have to set smaller, local goals. Thus, "I want to improve my kata" leads to "I want to improve my Heian kata", then leading to "I want to improve my Heian Shodan", then leading to "I want to improve my gedan barai (or age uke or my balance in 270 degree turn, or ...)". A local goal is very explicit, specific and gives you a specific direction for a real improvement by regular training.

3. Separate files on specific topics.

These are the collections of information on those specific topics, which I am interested. Examples: notes on learning specific combination for kumite, detailed comments of my current tokui kata, etc.

If you would like to start writing your own training diary, then, as a first step, I would suggest to understand why would you want to do it. Writing a diary regularly requires either motivation or discipline, or both.

One of the possibilities to start is to simply write down a short (or detailed) description of the training session. But I would recommend to add your own notes to this description like important points, your errors, your successes.

Another possibility to start is to separately write down your errors and successes mentioned by your sensei during the recent class. But this list should not be a simple reflection of what has happened, like a historical record. Well, a historical record could be interesting to read later, but we are aiming on the progress, aren't we? Thus, this list of errors should become a basis for your self-training plan.

Also, as I suggested earlier, you could combine this list or errors/successes with a short (or detailed) description of the training session.

Speaking of training plans.. Writing down reasonable and realistic training plans requires some understanding of methodology, which comes with experience. But the steps for the correction of those errors, pointed out during the recent class, could be a good start. And of course you could ask your sensei to help you in devising such a training plan.

Osu!

P.S. As always this post can be updated in the future. I like to keep the information in one place. So, if there will be something else to say on the topic "training diaries" I will simply add it to this post. The announcement about an updated post will be given at the top of the page.

Jitte

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Jitte (十手) - "Ten hands" ("10 рук"). There are several explanations of the name. 1) the techniques of the kata gives you a strength of ten men, 2) the techniques of the kata allows to fight again ten opponents, 3) the name of the kata comes from the name of the old weapon jitte (or jutte). Andre Bertel states in his blog that Asai Sensei said "the real meaning of Jitte is that there are ten practical fighting applications within this kata. But all of these use the body heavily but with the limbs light".

It is said that a Chinese castaway taught Jitte together with some other katas in the Tomari region on Okinawa. Funakoshi Sensei could possibly learn this kata from Itosu Anko Sensei.

The techniques of Jitte can be used again bo or jô (long staff or short staff). And, moreover, Jitte can be performed with bo or jô in your hands.

Some notes on Nijû Shi Ho

Tora Jo dôjô: Supplementary materials for kata training - дополнительные материалы для тренировки по ката: Nijû Shi Ho

As I have promised here in blog and during the Friday kata keiko, here is a small list of important points and common errors in Nijû Shi Ho. I have highlighted all these moments during the Friday training, so it could be a kind of a reminder for those karatekas who attended the class. Thank you for your good work, guys! Osu!

I provide the names of techniques as well as their numbers according to the book of Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 10. Unsu, Sôchin, Nijû Shi Ho". Kodansha International, 1987. If some other names are used, then the source is provided.

1. hidari shô chûdan osae (step back to migi kôkutsu dachi): strong powerful movement, tension is increased.

5. migi mae sanchin dachi, ryô ken awase zuki: stay straight, hips are in shomen position, fists are on one vertical line, strong sanchin dachi, don't lock your knees, don't bend your knees too much.

7. ryô ken chûdan kakiwake: slow and powerful movement, pay attention to the correct position of fists (they are not horizontal, but inclined) and use the muscles of your back to pull arms to sides and down (try the block against a strong grip!)

8. hidari jôdan age uke: don't shift the weight to right leg before moving to left. "Sink down" with the block, strongly moving to the left.

10. migi chûdan kake shutô uke: don't shift all you weight to left leg before turning to the right. Again "sink down".

Another possible version: chûdan tate shutô uke. Can be seen in Hirokazu Kanazawa "Shotokan Karate International Kata (Vol. 2)", technique 9, or in Fiore Tartaglia "Shôtôkan-Kata ab dem Schwarzgurt", Nijû Shi Ho, technique 9.

11. migi ken migi koshi, migi chûdan yoko kekomi: pay attention to the correct position of knee before and after the kick. Don't do chûdan yoko geri keage.

12. hidari chûdan zuki: this is gyaku zuki, not kagi zuki! Thus, an arm has to be straight. Turn your upper body, but don't turn your hips and don't break the stance. The stance has to be a solid kiba dachi. Don't forget strong hiki te.

16. migi tekubi chûdan makiotoshi, hidari teishô jôdan zuki: there is no chûdan gyaku tekubi kake uke before this technique in Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 10. Unsu, Sôchin, Nijû Shi Ho". You can see the absence of this technique in the video: Nijû Shi Ho performed by Asai Sensei in the JKA kata film (1960)

I have shown another possible version with chûdan gyaku tekubi kake uke. This version can be seen in Kanazawa Hirokazu "Shotokan Karate International Kata (Vol. 2)", technique 10B or in Fiore Tartaglia "Shôtôkan-Kata ab dem Schwarzgurt", Nijû Shi Ho, technique 15.

But in any case, don't shift weight to the back leg when proceeding to this technique or doing directly the technique 16 from Nakayama's book. "Sink down" with the block.

17. migi jôdan haitô uchi, hidari gedan teishô uchi: again I have shown another version of the technique than in the Nakayama's book, gedan haitô uke. This version can be seen in Kanazawa Hirokazu "Shotokan Karate International Kata (Vol. 2)", technique 11 or in Fiore Tartaglia "Shôtôkan-Kata ab dem Schwarzgurt", Nijû Shi Ho, technique 17. In Kanazawa's book this technique is not named explicitly, but the photo shows that the position of left hand is not teishô uchi, but haitô uke.

19. zenkutsu dachi, hidari shô gedan kokô sukui uke, migi shô gedan kokô tsukidashi: can be done in fûdo dachi.

I will update this list further, adding some more notes. Please watch the announcement list above!

I sincerely hope that this will help you to perfect the kata further. Osu!

Special note for Freiburg karatekas: Friday kata training vote poll

Dear fellow Freiburg karatekas, I have added a poll for voting, where you can mark your preferences for Friday kata training. Till now I have been choosing katas according to my personal needs. Sooner or later we will go through all katas, but if some kata is of a special interest then we can practice it rather sooner than later. Please don't hesitate to tell me you preferences while seeing personally in dôjô. Osu!

Nijû Shi Ho

I start to provide some supplementary materials for kata training: references to books, videos, Internet links, etc. The information will be updated later. But please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Nijû Shi Ho (二十四歩) - "Twenty-four steps" ("24 шага"). Original name is Niseishi.

Aragaki Seisho (an Okinawan martial arts master, 1840-1918(?1920)) taught Niseishi kata (which he has possibly learned from Wai Shin Zan (Wai Xin Xian), a Chinese martial arts teacher) to Mabuni Kenwa (1889-1952, the founder of Shitô ryû). Nakayama Masatoshi said he was told by Funakoshi Gichin to learn Niseishi from Mabuni Kenwa. As it was the case with other katas, Funakoshi Sensei changed the name Niseishi to Nijû Shi Ho.
